The schwere Panzerabteilung — heavy tank battalions — were elite formations fielding the formidable Tiger I. Deployed as a "fire brigade," these units were rushed to crisis points along the front wherever the Red Army threatened to break through. Their immense armour and 88mm gun made them virtually invulnerable at typical combat ranges.
Painting this force presented a unique challenge: capturing the worn, campaign-weary look of vehicles that had been in continuous action for months. Multiple layers of chipping medium, oil washes, and pigment powders were used to build up the characteristic dusty-rust appearance of late-war German armour operating in summer conditions.

The base coat was applied with an airbrush using Vallejo Model Air Dunkelgelb, followed by modulation with lightened and darkened variants to suggest sun-bleaching and shadow. The Zimmerit paste effect was painted separately with a small flat brush, working section by section to maintain the distinctive ridged pattern without losing definition.
Stowage and crew figures were painted separately before being attached, allowing full access to the recesses. Decals were applied over a gloss varnish layer and set with Micro-Sol before sealing with a satin varnish.

In The Game
The Tiger I Heavy Tank is a Confident Trained unit armed with an 8.8cm KwK 36 gun. Its exceptional front armour makes it difficult to destroy except at close range, while its long-range gun can defeat virtually any Allied tank at combat distances.
Unreliable: When the Tiger I attempts to move, roll a die. On a 1, the tank breaks down and cannot move this turn. Despite this, its firepower more than compensates on the defensive.
